Criminal Incident in Saitama

Saitama is a hero who kills monsters with one punch. He is so good at it that he has become the laughing stock of the Hero Association and is even mocked by his own mentor, Speed-o-Sound Sonic. Saitama is determined to break the humour and join the association, so he tries out his luck in a tournament against the best heroes of the time. This episode was first aired on 25 January 2023 in Japan. A month after this episode was broadcast, police arrested four teenagers in Saitama prefecture, near Tokyo. The teens were accused of a crime committed in the night on 15 August 2022, when they threw objects at a car in Kasukabe City, damaging it in several places. The teens told Saitama Police they had thrown chucks of concrete to provoke the car drivers and enjoy the thrill of the car chase. They were released three months later, but the teens have been re-arrested at least three times since then. This is unusual in cases like this, where the ordinary upper limit of re-arrests is about three, and re-arresting after that contributes to prison overcrowding. During these re-arrests, the four youths have repeatedly changed their stories about what they did. During 刑事事件 埼玉 for the boys, the prosecution explained that the boys were angry at Kyoto Animation, which produced some of their favourite cartoons, because they believed it had stolen a novel Aoba wrote for a writing competition. The studio denies the accusation. Prosecutors say Aoba was mentally competent when he instigated the attack on the studio and that it was not based on delusions. The case has been assigned to a lay judge system, in which lay judges are involved in the sentencing process. The first two cases under this system have been held in Tokyo and Saitama, near Tokyo. One involves a 71-year-old man who stabbed a woman to death in a dispute over land. The other case is a 35-year-old man who attempted to murder another 35-year-old male. The incident in Hanno reopened painful memories of the murder of Shiori Ino on 26 October 1999, who was murdered by Yoshifumi Kubota, a man who stalked her after she broke up with his smitten suitor and refused his demands for expensive gifts. Her death resulted in a major shake-up of how the Japanese legal system treats stalking. This was partly due to the media pressure that sparked a public outcry over the treatment of stalking in Japan, and also led to changes in police policies on the matter.
